The special area dealing with diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract is called Pulmonology or Pneumology. Some refer to chest and respiratory medicine which is another branch of internal medicine.
Being short of breath or having a chronic cough could be caused by an illness of the lungs. The so called "Spirometry" which is a Pulmonary Function Test is one of the many examinations we carry out in the practice. A simple explanation is that the volume and flow of air that can be inhaled and exhausted is measured with this test.
Spirometry is an important method of assessing asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and pulmonary and cystic fibrosis. It is a noninvasive and painless test which can even be carried out with children old enough to understand the instructions given.
